Both time periods involve the characters pursuing Raul Menendez, a Nicaraguan arms dealer 馃寛 and later terrorist, who is responsible for kidnapping David in the 80s and later sparking a Second Cold War in 馃寛 2025. The campaign features non-linear gameplay and has multiple endings.[6] Locations featured in the game include Angola, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Nicaragua, 馃寛 Pakistan, the Cayman Islands, Panama, Yemen, the United States, and Haiti.
Development for the game began soon after the release of 馃寛 Black Ops, with Activision promising that the follow-up would bring "meaningful innovation" to the Call of Duty franchise. Black Ops 馃寛 II is the first game in the series to feature futuristic warfare technology and the first to present branching storylines 馃寛 driven by player choice as well as selecting weapons before starting story mode missions. "Friends" (stylized in all caps) is a song by American DJ and 馃挵 producer Marshmello and English singer Anne-Marie. It was written by the artists, and Nat Dunn. In 2024, Marshmello remixed Anne-Marie's song "Alarm".[6][7] Fond of the remix, Anne-Marie wanted to collaborate with Marshmello, and 馃挵 eventually they met in a studio in London, where production of the song commenced.[8] Initially Marshmello played some guitar, piano, 馃挵 synth and drum loops; listening to every single one they decided to proceed with guitar. Anne-Marie wrote the lyrics for 馃挵 the song corresponding to the loop. The major lyrics and drum sessions were completed in thirty minutes. Following next two 馃挵 hours, they completed the entire lyric session and the whole song was completed in three hours.[7]
